Homosexuality In Islam

I remember vividly the night I told Yusuf about my plans to discuss a range of controversial but important topics that I believed were not sufficiently addressed in Muslim families and communities. That conversation did not go very well; I recall we nearly had a fight about it. He was mainly concerned for my well being and did not understand why I was ready to open up a channel for people to cyber-attack me and be negative towards me. I had to help him understand that his concerns were well founded but it was something I really wanted to talk about and I believe I was fit to address the issue.

For those of you wondering, I did not wake up one morning and decide to talk about things like homosexuality. Nor did I consider it as some kind of writing challenge or an aim to stir up some controversy on the internet. It’s something that has been nagging at the back of my mind for years. Yes years.  I’ve ached for a long time to write about it but I never really had the courage or thought I could be eloquent enough to convey my message to my readers. In the end it all comes down to a 21 year old woman’s opinion, and I speak for myself and for those that agree with me or are willing to listen to me.

Now I will start off by asking you (my reader) a question: what do you think is the most important thing in the world?

Take a second to think about that.

Do you have an answer?

Remember the world is a very big place. I’m not asking about the world you desire or imagine to be the ideal world (that is largely shaped by your own experience, limited thoughts and ideas). I mean the real world; filled with the earth, water, land, trillions of creatures, blood, fossils, wonder and many unanswered questions. I want you to picture yourself taking a step out of the earth (as though you’re in space) and you have the earth and its entire grandness in full view. It’s a mighty view isn’t it? Now I ask again what do you think is the most important thing in the world you are looking at?

Now I don’t know what your answer is but I’ll tell you something, a lot of people believe love is the most important thing in the world. Don’t believe me? Take a moment to quickly google ‘what is the most important thing in the world?’ You should get an answer that says love and family.

Love they say makes the world go round. Do you agree with that saying? I’ll confess I once used to believe so myself. As a matter of fact, there was a point in my life that I was ready to give up everything I believed in, in the name of love. However, looking back with a lot more wisdom, I’ve come to learn that love isn’t the most important thing in the world. The more correct opinion to hold is that love is the most important language for all to speak. Love should be the universal language and not the English language. Every time we address each other, it should be from a place of love, compassion and respect. You see what goes around will always come back around. These days people spread curses, hatred and lies and it has quick become the mother tongue.

Now if love isn’t the answer, what then is the most important thing in the world? The answer is God. Allah (s.w.t) is the most important thing in the world. He created the world and everything in it and as such He is tied to all existence. He provides for the entire universe and has absolute control over everything. For those who don’t believe in God, I imagine my answer is not one that will resonate well with you. If that’s the case, I acknowledge that this will be our first point of disagreement. For those who agree with me, be patient with me and keep an open mind.

The honest truth is if we believe, declare or preach that love is the most important thing in the world, then it means as human beings we must support everything and anything that is founded by love, which I believe would cause the world to be catastrophic and damn right disastrous. Some may think me mad; how can you equate love to be disastrous?

One of the beauty of our creation is our diversity, we all have unique traits in our looks and abilities, we all have different aspirations, experiences, likes, dislikes and diverging opinions. For example have you met someone who genuinely loves pain? They derive pleasure from experiencing and inflicting pain upon others? The truth is their peculiar interest is not up for you to validate or understand, just as much as someone does not need to validate or understand why you like the warmth over the cold. Warmth and Cold at their respective extremities are dangerous aren’t they? I reason that society recognizes the evident harm that can stem from the love for pain and it is why such love is not accepted in the society and such people or to be more precise ‘such interests’ are not welcomed.

Thus in the past when we see someone that loves pain in the society we are quick to judge and call them a sadist; we respond by saying it’s not okay to love pain, such a person cannot be ‘normal’. What do we do…we recommend they need help or lock them up cause it’s just not right to love pain and to want to inflict it upon others.

Let’s move on. Have you met someone who loves child pornography and derives pleasure sleeping with or fantasizes about sleeping with children? Once again I reason that society recognizes the evident harm that can stem from that kind of love and it is why such love is not accepted in the society and such people or to be more precise ‘such interests’ are not welcomed. In the past when we see someone that loves child pornography we are quick to judge and call them a pedophile; we respond by saying it’s sickening, such a person cannot be ‘normal’; once again we recommend help to them.

I cannot lament enough how much it tires my soul; how hypocritical human beings can be and how we are easily able to call out on something we don’t understand, agree or relate with. However, when it’s our turn to be on the other side (where majority of the world doesn’t agree with what we want or claim to be progressive or right) we don’t start to recommend or think we need help for ourselves or that we are not normal, the only agreeable thing for us to do is to make sure and convince the rest of the world to agree with us. If you haven’t noticed, I break it to you now that this is the 21st century way of doing things. I’m not particularly eager to see the end result of the the world if we continue to do things like this as opposed to doing what we know or reason to be right.

I’ll draw your attention back to my earlier point. If you still believe love is the most important thing in the world then you should support it in every shape or form it surfaces. No true and valid belief should be agreeable in some parts and disagreeable in other parts. In other words one mans food shouldn’t be another mans poison in the case of a rightly upheld belief or system. The belief or sovereignty in love should be food for all and not poison to some.

If love is indeed the most important thing then know love is love, you don’t get to choose which shape or form it surfaces or which love is agreeable or not. You don’t get to say a man cannot love a child. You don’t get to say a man inflicting pain another is not right. After all don’t they love it and don’t you believe in the sanctity of it? It sounds dangerous doesn’t it? Now you see why I say it will be disastrous if we attach or hold love to be the most important thing in the world. Those that are insightful should already know the point I’m trying to make. However, I will be slow to make my landing for all.

As we all know love is subjective and not objective and it’s why the world cannot be governed by such a subjective concept or belief (i.e which takes many shapes and forms) because there will always be a group of people that won’t be covered by the concept or belief. Not everyone loves chocolate. Not everyone loves chicken. Not everyone loves babies. Not everyone loves the summer. It’s also why man cannot rule this earth. Man, a human being does not have the capacity to understand the infinite differences in the world. It is only the Person that created man and the many differences that arises in the world that can understand it. It is also that Person that can determine what is best for everyone or determine what rule is best to govern all creations or the universal test that everyone must undergo. Everyone in this world irrespective of our differences and where we hail from, we are all experiencing and sharing the same universal test that’s been designed by one Person. Who is that Person? It is God and it’s why He is the most important thing in the world.

God I will repeat is the most important thing in the world. As a person who believes so, it must be such that His commands, instructions, pleasures are things that should be welcomed and followed by me and all others that believe so or acknowledge Him.

You’ll agree with me that in the name of love, many of us do things to please those we love (sometimes they are things we don’t particularly like). If it’s true you believe in God or you love God then it’s only natural that you will seek to do things that pleases Him. One of it is doing the things He loves and staying clear of the things He doesn’t. Those who have experienced true love know that love is sacrificial and bittersweet. A mother sacrifices a lot for the child she loves. It doesn’t mean they don’t want or love the things they have sacrificed but they know it’s something that has to be done for something greater; their child’s well being and happiness. They give and are willing to give every ounce of their being to ensure that is guaranteed. Why can’t we show the same love for our Creator?

So I believe there are two parts to this; there’s the part where society rejects homosexuality and there’s the other part where (most) religion also rejects homosexuality. I’m not concerned and won’t speak up for the society that rejects homosexuality because like I mentioned earlier, human beings can be very hypocritical especially when it concerns matters they don’t understand, relate or agree with. Furthermore, the society although it may be seen as one has many faces and therefore cannot be trusted or be relied on to correctly validate what’s right and what’s wrong. Today I’m concerned and will only speak up on why Islam, my religion rejects homosexuality.

As Muslims, we have been blessed with the holy Quran; a book that contains only the words of God and is filled with mind blowing revelations and scientific facts, facts which science today confirms no man during the time the Quran was revealed could have ever known to be correct. It’s simply impossible because science and technology was nowhere close to being advance at the time the Quran was revealed, and as such it is easy to denounce that the Quran is a man made book or that the language, eloquence and knowledge expressed in the Quran belonged to a mere mortal. Every message contained in the Quran was spoken by God and myself and every other Muslim believes so.

That said God knows very much that we don’t know Him because we’ve never met Him, nor have we spoken to Him directly (except for Moses) but He has deliberately orchestrated life to be that way and has decreed that we will all meet Him at a time He wants. A time that has been decreed and will eventually come to pass. However, before that time comes Allah has given us (every person that is to come after Prophet Muhammad’s time) the Quran, in which He tells us everything He believes is sufficient for us to live by. He makes mention in the Quran what He loves and detests, the things He wants us to do and the things he does not want us to do, He also confirms and reassures us about the realities of the life He created for us, He teaches us about some of the crucial things that happened in the past and warns us about what is to come in the future among many other things in the Quran.

Now one of the great signs of God is that he created man and woman for them to be together, for both sexes to find comfort in one another through marriage. Allah made reference to this in several parts of the Quran such as:

“Another of His signs is that He created spouses from among yourselves for you to live in tranquility: He ordained love and kindness between you. There truly are signs in this for those who reflect.”

Surah Ar-Rum [30:21]

“People, be mindful of your Lord, who created you from a single soul, and from it created its mate, and from the pair of them spread countless men and women far and wide; be mindful of God, in whose name you make requests of one another.”

Surah An-Nisa [4:1]

“Did We not create you in pairs, give you sleep for rest, the night as a cover, and the day for your livelihood?”

Surah An Naba [78:8]

Now I dare to say when Allah created Adam [the first man] he did not remove one of his ribs to create another man. One of Allah’s goals for us as human beings is to reproduce, to multiply in number and that can only be achieved when a female and a male mates. No amount of science or technology in this world can change that or re-write the way God has created us. God has designed our DNA to be such that one of both sexes must come together to be compatible and to reproduce. Any other thing will not work except by His will. Everything Allah does and has created has a specific purpose and every purpose shall be carried out whether we like it or not.

We currently live in a time of the world where homosexuality exists at an alarming and unprecedented number and is now welcomed in some parts of the world. For us Muslims this (phenomena) is not just happening for the first time. Allah revealed to us in the Quran the very first time and place homosexuality came to be and that was during Prophet Lut’s time. This incident is also recounted in the other Abrahamic faiths (with slight differences). God purposely revealed to us in the Quran what happened to the people of Lut, in order for us to understand His attitude and reaction towards homosexuality and to serve as a warning for others that may wish to engage in the act of homosexuality, by mentioning in the Quran the punishment and the example He made of the people of Lut, who failed to change their ways after being warned several times by their Prophet. God makes it very clear in the Quran that homosexuality is an act He detests very much. The act is so abominable and reprehensible to the point that

The Prophet (SAW) said, “When two men start to commit sodomy, the throne of Allah shakes. Fearing Allah’s wrath the heavens almost fall on earth but the angels hold their outskirts and recite suratul Ikhlas until Allah’s wrath reposes.”

I am someone that’s very sensitive and as a result it has made me to be equally sensitive of other people’s emotions. I, personally would like to put myself in the shoes of the men during Prophet Lut’s time and the men and women who identify themselves as either gay, lesbian, bisexual, homosexual, queer e.t.c I hate labels to be honest, but permit me to use any of the above references in addressing such people in this post.

The plain truth is I don’t understand the emotions that gay people feel and as such I can’t really relate with their feelings. However, I do understand very much what it means to want or desire strongly something you cannot have or something that is wrong. In the case of homosexuality how do I know it is wrong? I know it’s wrong because My rabb, Allah who is Al Alim (the All Knowing) has told me so and I personally reason to the best of my abilities that it’s not right. My Muslim brothers and sisters not all desires must be pursued.

The beauty about Islam is that you are not punished for your feelings or emotions; only your actions. Why is that? The simplest answer I can give is that as human beings, God gave us something special that no other creation has; the ability to think and when we exercise that ability coupled with guidance from Allah, we should be able to do right by ourselves and arrive at good decisions. It is only people who have lost the ability to think (are mentally ill) that will not be judged for doing anything even if it’s wrong and against Allah’s wishes.

It hits me all the time when Allah addresses us in the Quran and asks us ‘do human beings not use their reasoning? Do we not have any sense?’. It tells us a lot that God wants us to use our heads and not our hearts which can be easily swayed. If something doesn’t make sense to us as human beings we are quick to call it out and say ‘wait that doesn’t make any sense’. Why is it that we are not as harsh with out hearts when we feel things? When our thoughts start slipping away and we find our thoughts flirting with danger we are quick to snap out of it…but with our hearts we enslave oursleves. We follow our hearts wherever it leads and later have to deal with the unfortunate consequences. We are so much more than our feelings and flesh.

I don’t know if you have noticed but whenever it comes to our hearts, Allah always makes mention in the Quran that ‘he sees and knows what is harbored in the hearts of men.’ So do not think for one second that Allah doesn’t understand how you feel. He knows too well as a matter of fact. He created your heart, he knows everything that happens to it. Every blood that is supplied to it. He knows. Every thing that causes you heart to feel doubt. He knows. Everything that causes your heart to race. He knows. Everything that fills your heart with joy that it almost feels like it will explode out of Joy, He knows. Everything that causes your heart to shrink with fear. He knows and He tells us this multiple times in the Quran.

“Say [Prophet], God knows everything that is in your hearts, whether you conceal or reveal it; He knows everything in the heavens and earth; God has power over all things.”

Surah Ali- Imran [3:29]

“Whether you keep your words secret or state them openly, He knows the contents of every heart. How could He who created not know His own creation, when He is the Most Subtle, the All Aware?”

Surah Al Mulk [67: 13-14]

“God is aware of the most furtive of glances, and of all that the hearts conceal: God will judge with truth, while those they invoke besides Him will not judge at all. God is the All Hearing, the All Seeing.”

Surah Al Ghafir [40:19]

“Your Lord knows what their hearts conceal and what they reveal.”

Sural Al Qasas [28:69]

“God knows all that is hidden in the heavens and earth; He knows the thoughts contained in the heart.”

Surah al Fatir [35:38]

“We created man – We know what his soul whispers to him: We are closer to Him than his jugular vein”

Surah Al Qaf [50:16]

Now, another thing Allah reminds us in the Quran is that He is Al Hakam; The Judge, the Giver of Justice and on the day of Judgement, He will judge and resolve all matters and disputes that has arisen since the beginning of time till the end. This brings me to one of the first points I want to make. As human beings whether we are black or blue, Muslim or atheists, we should not judge people that are openly or secretly gay. We have absolutely no right to do so. Allah is the only one who has the right to do so. We should not treat them any differently. Remember the language I spoke about earlier? You are only allowed to speak with them from a place of love.

Now don’t get me wrong this does not mean I support gay people (for those of you wondering). I personally do not support the interest they have chosen to pursue. Also, as Muslims, we cannot support their decision to persist in doing an act that Allah hates so much and made very clear in the Quran. I simply cannot distinguish that defiance of Allah’s command from the command Allah Gave to Iblis, which he also defied and costed him heaven and earned him the punishment of the fire.

Ultimately, if they decide to pursue their desires and ignore the message and warnings of God and your reminders, then leave their private affairs to Allah alone. Who best can handle a creation other than the One that created it? There’s nothing you can do. I mean Prophet Lut tried to help his own people. He begged, he cried, he tried to warn, he tried to reason with them, but they remained defiant and insisted that they will continue to pursue their interest. Lut tried everything within his power (even offered his beloved daughters to the men) but sadly he could not get them to change their ways, to stop the act Allah hated so much. What happened to them? Well they are not alive today to tell you their story but Allah told us what happened to them, they were utterly destroyed.

As human beings we need to remember that although Allah created us, honored us above his other creations, gave us purpose, and loves us we need to know and be reminded of our place when we decide to cross a line He has drawn and how very replaceable we are by Allah. As in the case with our office, any position we hold in this life; there’s a term for everything; as president, as the CEO, as a teacher. Know your place. Know the role you play in this world and what you are supposed to do.

I roll my eyes whenever someone asks the question how can you be gay? How does one become gay is pointless. We ask the wrong questions. Is it possible to be gay? Obviously it is. How many numbers/statistics do you need before you can convince yourself that people can become attracted to someone of their own sex?

The question I’d like to pose to my Muslim brothers and sisters is that if you are someone that presently has an interest in someone of the same sex or you find that at some later point in your life you have a growing interest or are attracted to someone of the same sex, and you know what is the most important thing in the world, do you want to earn Allah’s pleasure and reward or his anger and wrath?

A child will not be able to beat its hand on its chest and say proudly that his mother loves him just by hearing the mother say it. A child knows a mother genuinely loves him after having seen or have been told by witnesses how many nights the mother sacrificed to look after him, the amount of weight she lost by running around and looking after him. When a mother sacrifices her sleep to look after her child do you think the mother doesn’t deserve sleep or rest? When the mother sacrifices her meal to feed her own child? You think the mother doesn’t have hunger pains also or a stomach to feed too? Can you compare a mother who sacrifices a lot and invests her time and sweat on a child with another mother who does neither except to claim and tell everyone she loves her child? Can you really? Many of us claim we believe in God and love him but what have you done to prove it? Have you done the things He liked? Have you stayed clear of the things He said you should stay clear of? Do you follow his commandments? Or you only do whatever appeases to you and what’s convenient? A true believer does not decide to do or not do the things Allah likes or dislikes just cause it’s easy or favorable to them. A true believer does not pick some of the commandments of Allah to follow and the ones he will not follow.

Iblis is someone a few feel sympathetic towards and argue had valid reasons for defying God. When you compare the properties of fire and clay some argue that fire is indeed better than clay as Iblis claimed. I’m not a scientist so I genuinely do not know the answer to that. But, again that’s not the right thing to focus on. Allah ordered the angels and Iblis who was amongst their company at the time to bow down to Adam as a sign of respect to man.

I mean just think about the Angels alone who are Allah’s Soldiers; gigantic and extremely powerful and beautiful creatures with formidable fighting skills. Can you really compare such creature with man? Man has no super powers except it’s intellect and God given free will. God (who created all creatures including man, angels and jinns) definitely knows which of his creatures is the best or the most powerful yet he asked the angels and Iblis to bow down to man. Why? There was a purpose behind that command and it was that God honored men before his other creatures.

All the angels bowed except Iblis (Shaytan) out of sheer arrogance. I can think of a hundred reasons as to why he didn’t obey Allah such as: jealousy, envy, egotism but his defiance costed him everything. Men should wake up and think! All these aren’t stories for us to talk and gosh about; they are painful examples of what happened to some of the best and worst of Allah’s creations. Allah recounted all these so we won’t make the same mistakes and follow in the footsteps of those whose end shall be far from jolly.

When Iblis was casted out of heaven for defying God he did not even apologise or beg for God’s forgiveness. What did he do instead?

“And then Iblis said, ‘Because You have put me in the wrong, I will lie in wait for them all on Your straight path: I will come at them – from their front and their back, from their right and their left – and You will find that most of them are ungrateful.”

Al Hijr [15:39]

He blamed God for his own action. He told God out-rightly that You made this happen, You could have prevented me from doing so but You didn’t so it’s your fault. Tell me how far astray can someone be that he cannot even see or admit his own fault but would rather blame others for his wrong action. It is for that reason that I believe Shaytan was doomed to hell as well as the promise he made to Allah that he will misguide all Men who believe in him.

More importantly Allah makes mention in multiple places in the Quran that:

“[Prophet], tell My Servants that I am the Forgiving, the Merciful.”

Al Hijr [15:49]

Allah is Al – Ghaffar; the one who pardons and forgives a lot. I know if Iblis had asked Allah for forgiveness he would have gotten it but he did not. His unrepentant heart and arrogance was what led to his downfall.

I want to make something clear…even if the lowest, most ignorant and most clueless human being doesn’t love or care about God or doesn’t even want to earn His love (which doesn’t make sense considering the fact that Allah has given you everything you have including the slightest happiness you have ever felt or known), the least you can do is to acknowledge Allah’s greatness (signs of which you pass by every day) including His authority and power over you. You should fear that, you have absolutely every reason to fear that. If your senses cannot come together to add these things up then I’m afraid there is really no point trying to reason or talk to you.

Allah does not need us; He is self sufficient and He makes this very clear in the Quran in many places.

“Everything in the heavens and the earth belongs to God. We have commanded those who were given the Scripture before you, and We command you, to be mindful of God. Even if you do ignore Him, everything in the heavens and the earth belongs to Him, and He is self-sufficient, worthy of all praise. Yes, indeed, everything in the heavens and the earth belongs to God, and He is enough for those who trust Him. If He so willed, He could remove you altogether and replace you with new people: He has full power to do so.”

An Nisa [4:131-133]

Without a doubt Allah can turn you into dust, cause you to be wiped clean of this world and not to be remembered by a single soul, to not matter but no He doesn’t do that. He loves you enough that He thought you were worthy of being created and to be loved and respected by his other creations. He brought you into existence for one ultimate reason to worship Him and He also gifted you with several abilities and designed you in ways that you have some strengths and weakness (both of which can be used to your advantage), he also created you to participate in the greatest game he designed called life; where you will face many challenges and experience many triumphs, where you are guaranteed to feel many highs and many lows. Of course He also made sure He didn’t place you in a game you won’t know how to play; it’s why He left you a manual (the Quran); which details everything you need to succeed in the game He has designed.

It’s a game that’s been perfectly designed by Him and the wise will learn to play by His rules. You cannot re-write the rules. You cannot change a dime. You are in Allah’s court; the sooner you realise and acknowledge that and start playing by the rules and knowing what will win you extra good points the better for you. It’s a game with a mighty price (Heaven) that’s too good to pass on and a harsh penalty (hell) if you choose to break and play by other rules. Open your eyes and see life for what it truly is.

“Bear in mind that the present life is just a game, a diversion, an attraction, a cause of boasting among you, of rivalry in wealth and children…”

Surah Al Hadid [57:20]

For my Muslim brothers and sisters who struggle with interests that are not to put it lightly ‘warmly welcomed’ by Allah, I beg you to see this as a test. Allah tests us in many ways to see if we really love and believe in him as we claim and if we are any different from those of his creations he has tested before. He knows the answer, the question is do you? That’s an answer you will have to give Allah when he tests you. We think written or oral exams/tests are the hardest…reality is the hardest test.

Remember always that each time you fall ill, he heals you. Each time someone causes you pain, he gives you many other reasons to smile. No body has and can ever have it all. Everyone in the world is being tested, with love, loss, health, power, money, family and so much more. Whatever test you are going through, its a phase and it will pass by, just hold on tight to the ropes and commands of God and you’ll be guaranteed to meet a great end.

Lastly, I’d like to round off by saying I once had a friend that was secretly a lesbian. She is genuinely one of the best individuals I have ever met and one of the most selfless people I know. But then Allah has chosen to test her with an interest of hers. I remember her asking me one night when we were studying that how come I was so cool with her being a lesbian (as a Muslim)? I had to correct her that actually I was not cool with her being a lesbian and that I never spoke to her about it because I knew she was a Christian, I drew her attention to her bible on her bedside and I told her I knew what her bible says and the position of her faith with regards to homosexuality; which isn’t different from Islam. I told her I wasn’t going to tell her anything different from what we both know to be the position of her interest with the faith she followed.

I reasoned with her on another point though; I asked her if she knew anything about genetic sexual attraction. She replied no. I told her it was something I read up a couple of months earlier about how its possible for a member of the family to develop sexual desires for another family member. I cannot forget the look on her face; it resembled someone that was close to barfing up the whole room. She replied no that’s crazy! I asked is it really?

I further responded by saying that as far as our ignorance goes, I’ll admit it was a crazy thing but the truth was, contrary to what human beings feel (believing they know it all) human beings are one of the most clueless creatures on earth and don’t actually know what’s wrong and what’s right. I backed up my statement by saying something we may think is common sense/logical (such as us not mating with our family members), God in the Quran literally had to list out every person that is not permissible for us to marry and have intercourse with and those we can. He legit listed them out.

When I read that ayat for the first time in the Quran, I remember thinking did God really have to be crystal clear on the matter? Shouldn’t everyone know this? But with what is happening today and the advent of genetic sexual attraction, it is evident that not everyone knows this. This event is happening say what? 1300 years after the Quran was revealed? God knows his creation and knows that some of us can get it wrong or be confused about these things so he revealed it to us to be clear on those we can’t go near and those he permits for us.

Human beings as much as we like to claim otherwise, don’t actually know any better. We really do not know what’s good for us and what’s bad. Allah has to make clear some of these things; inlcuding what we can eat and not eat; and other things He knows with the gift of intellect and reasoning He has bestowed upon us, we can make the right decisions on our own if we choose to do so.

I told her to put herself in their shoes. You don’t choose who you fall in love with…you are an example. Yes many things happen to make us fall in love but lets say we don’t choose who we are attracted to. We are much more helpless in that regards. I told her the way I view their condition is the way I view gay people. She tried to make an argument of how its different but later kept quiet cause she knows they aren’t. The only difference is that one falls in love with with someone of its kind. And another falls in love with someone of its blood/ family.

No human being can comfortably seat and allow another human being to dictate what is right and whats wrong. And that’s why Religion has the important role it does in the society. God, our Creator, the supreme being is the only Person with the position to tell us such. He’s the only person we can actually follow and it’s not blind following cause Allah has told us many times in the Quran to see the many signs He has left us. As human beings our job is to identify them and come to that conclusion that He is real. His guidance is true. His promise is true. His path is the answer and its why we follow him; His religion (that makes clear how we should handle our affairs). No other man made law is perfect; there are always re-enactement, ambiguities, loop-holes; Allah’s book has none. As Muslims who have read His book and believe in His words, we identify it as the truth and its why we testify that His choice of life/way of living for us is the best. However, the choice remains for you to choose.

Whichever way you choose, know as with all choices there are consequences. If you choose Allah’s path it leads you somewhere and He has made it clear which path that leads to; Jannah. If you choose shaytans path he has told you which path that leads to; Hell. It’s left to you to choose.

If you choose the wrong path then do not be amongst those who He has revealed in Quran that on the day of judgement they would wish they had chosen differently. That’s the greatest loss as far as I’m concerned. Nothing more shameful than regret. If you choose something follow it to the end. Don’t go back with regrets.

Everyone should know that we will be tested to the point where it’s either we choose what we want or Allah. Most times what we want is actually what the shaytan wants…if only we were wise enough to see it. You can beat your chest 100000 times that what Allah wants is what is best and what serves you best. He created you, you think He doesn’t know what’s best for His creation? As human beings we really need to re analyse our choices and take a moment to reflect before making any choice. Whatever you are going through see it as a test and Ask Allah to make it easy for you. Pray that Allah’s choice will always be your choice; it is good for you in the long run.

Thanks for being patient and May Allah bless us all and soften our hearts and make it so that we are able to exercise the best of judgement and upon recognition of the truth we find the strength to stand by it.

  1. Great piece. May Allah bless you, increase us in beneficial knowledge and guide us on to the right part. I like the way you separated the topic into two parts: Homosexuality in society and Homosexuality in Islam. Homosexuality is such a grave sin that Allah destroyed a whole people because of it. I have watched some documentaries where evidences point to Dead Sea as the location where the people of Lut (AS) were destroyed because of this sin. Dead Sea, for some who don’t know is the lowest point on earth and no living creature can survive in the water because of the amount of salt (Its salt concentration is a staggering 33.7%, 8.6 times saltier than ocean water. Some people say this salt is because of the people that were destroyed, Allah knows best). This is how severe the punishment was that it’s now the lowest point on earth and no living thing can live there, Subhanallah. I also like the way you highlighted Allah’s forgiveness and mercy. It gives hope to anyone knowing that we have a Rabb who is Oft forgiving and Most Merciful. We all commit sins and the Prophet (pbuh) said the best of sinners are those who repent. We are supposed to be ashamed about ours sins, keep them private and ask forgives never to do it again. But in the case of this sin, people are making it public and even worse trying to normalize it and force people to accept it (similar to the people of Lut (AS). May Allah protect us). This I believe is one of the main issues we face and why it is very dangerous nowadays. It is a very dangerous agenda. May Allah protect us. I also like the way you highlighted how we should treat them and not judge them (because judgement is for Allah alone). A lecture I watched by Nouaman Ali came to mind. He talked about how big of a sin is to say Allah has a son. He quoted the verses in Surah Maryam “The heavens almost rupture therefrom and the earth splits open and the mountains collapse in devastation” Q20 V90 because some people say that Allah has taken a son. But the same people who say this (Christians of Najran) came to the prophet (pbuh) and he welcomed them and let them stay in the masjid. Why would he welcome them after this grave blasphemy that the skies almost burst? Because he (pbuh) understood his role, he understood that he is a “warner and giver of glad tidings” and it is Allah who can judge them. Similarly we should know our boundaries with those who commit this act. We should not cross the boundary least we become the ones committing sin in the eyes of Allah. But I believe warning (or I should say educating them) is a must. The verses of Surah Al-Aaraf comes to mind about the Sabbath breakers. Three groups were involved: those that are committing the sin, those that warn them and those that know it’s a sin and didn’t warn them. In the end of the verses, Allah only spoke about two groups (he saved those that have warned them and transformed then destroyed those that were committing the sin). As for those that knw about the sin and didn’t warn them about it, these are worse according to the tafsir of this verses that I read that Allah didn’t even border to talk about them (some scholars say they were also amongst those that were transformed and destroyed). “And ask them (O Muhammad (Peace be upon him)) about the town that was by the sea; when they transgressed in the matter of the Sabbath (i.e. Saturday): when their fish came to them openly on the Sabbath day, and did not come to them on the day they had no Sabbath. Thus We made a trial of them, for they used to rebel against Allah’s Command (disobey Allah). And when a community among them said: “Why do you preach to a people whom Allah is about to destroy or to punish with a severe torment?” (The preachers) said: “in order to be free from guilt before your Lord (Allah), and perhaps they may fear Allah.” So when they forgot the remindings that had been given to them, We rescued those who forbade evil, but We seized those who did wrong with a severe torment because they used to rebel against Allah’s Command (disobey Allah). So when they exceeded the limits of what they were prohibited, We said to them: “Be you monkeys, despied and rejected”. (Al-Araf, 163-166) .
